Capturing the essence of WinterStorm 2023

WinterStorm 2023 Video Gallery

Since 2017, WinterStorm has been blessed with some superb promotional video footage of some of the most memorable performances. Bernie Marsden and Bernie Torme come straight to mind but a host of others over the years went into making the COVID year video The Story so Far which is well worth a wee look at too.

Our videographer in chief is Graham Gebbie and for 2023 it was a whole load of new tech, line feed from the main sound desk and even better mixing software than before. The results are absolutely stunning.

The footage published has all have been approved by each band and is for promotional purposes for both us and them. We are mixing a single track from each artist and also making the footage available for the bands' own use - keep an eye on this page for updates as they are published.

Some of the tracks are absolutely dynamite and do capture what makes WinterStorm what it is for so many fans.

You lot!

Tyketto

Tyketto always deliver regardless of what stage they are on. That's a given. But WinterStorm 2023 seemed just a little bit special from where we stood and they truly nailed it lifting the crowd higher and higher until well until they had Wings. Sorry. Here's the finale to a wonderful performance by one of WinterStorm's favourites with the 'Storm choir on backing vocals.

Focus

Booking Focus was really not that unusual for WinterStorm as we have never tried to be singular in our staging or genres. but for some it was a wee bit of a surprise. The biggest challenge? Probably humping that original Hammond Organ up those stairs to that stage tested the team to the max but boy was it worth it hearing it's wonderful sounds resonate through the Troon Concert Hall. And our first flute? For sure! The whole performance was captivating with so many highlights but really we couldn't have chosen anything else for the first video release from the set so please, play this through your speakers on your big TV screen and enjoy one of the most virtuoso performances from any band in the history of WinterStorm.

Pat McManus Band

Pat McManus most clearly fell easily into the Legends and Legacies category of WinterStorm 2023. This Northern Irish guitar guru is well known to WinterStorm fans through his long career with The Pat McManus Band but also the years with Mama's Boys. The Celtic influence fused much of the work over the years, no more so when the fiddle appeared, and while any one of the performances from the set could have been selected, we've went for Runaway Dreams. Wonderfully evocative and captures not only Pat's talent but also his personality. Superb set all round.

Doogie White and Friends

Doogie White teased us all this year with the request that it should be billed as Doogie White and Friends. It turned out that those friends were 1980's Glasgow based rockers La Paz performing as a special one off. The set list covered their own stuff and a mix of songs Doogie's performed through his career with Rainbow and Schenker amongst others. As ever he performed Temple of the King, which has become an audience favourite as well as being immortalised in a bench on the seafront remembering lost friends. This year it incorporated a tingling crowd participating chorus or two of Ain't No Love in tribute to Bernie Marsden. Magnificent, emotional and just so WinterStorm.

Chantel McGregor

Chantel McGregor first performed at WinterStorm 2021 and to say she captivated an unsuspecting audience would simply be a gross understatement! Her afternoon main stage full band set in that first performance was followed by what became a legendary Sessions Stage acoustic performance in front of a gob smacked, respectfully silenced rock audience. In fact it was so good we couldn't do anything but ask Chantel to repeat it all again this year. It was just as magnificent second time around! Here is Chantel McGregor in full flow on the main stage with a superb almost classical performance on lead. Near ten minutes of guitar heaven. This is simply breath-taking stuff.

Praying Mantis

Praying Mantis are an integral part of WinterStorm's DNA - from being the first band to be officially booked to their glorious returns and Children of the Earth has become the background to so many of not only the promotional videos for the event but the environmental ethos too. And they just keeping getting better and better live. 2023 was probably the tightest, most impressive performance they have given to an increasingly affectionate WinterStorm audience who have taken them as one of their own! The track "Highway" is taken form the 2009 album Sanctuary. We cannot honestly say that they won't be back in the future!

Chez Kane

Chez first arrived at WinterStorm with her two sisters fronting the seven piece melodic rock band Kane'd. Since going our on her own as Chez Kane, she has released two albums on Frontiers produced by another WinterStorm alumni, Danny Rexon from Crazy Lixx. The track Better than Love is the opener from the eponymously titled debut album and was part of a superb live set at WinterStorm 2023.

The New Roses

The New Roses were one of the bands that were absolutely unknowns to the majority of the crowd back in 2018 when they first played WinterStorm. They blew the roof off the place with an electric and captivating performance so there was little doubt of the huge welcome they were going to receive on their return in '23. Second time around was even better! Enjoy "Usual Suspects" - part of another magnificently crafted set.

Ashen Reach

One of the beauties of WinterStorm is that you can move seamlessly from Chantel McGregor doing an acoustic set to the hammering metallic rhythms of Merseyside based Ashen Reach. Heavy but very definitely modern in sound; melodic and soaring choruses they were one of the big surprises in their first performance at WinterStorm and that was shown by the full house for their 2023 set. Ghosts is off their EP, The Fear; atmospheric and heavy in equal measure. Summed up the full set to be honest.

Gin Annie

WinterStorm 2023 turned things on its head with the idea of opening up with a previous fan favourite on the Thursday afternoon. The place was rammed at 2.30pm and Gin Annie once again proved that as a live act they are hard to beat. It was an awesome opening set and set a pace for the rest of the day that carried through all the way to Michael Schenker some eight hours later. Here's "The Devil in Me" which was released by the Midlands rockers as a stand alone single in 2021.

Tygers of Pan Tang

Along with Praying Mantis, Tygers of Pan Tang have almost become the house band for WinterStorm and for the organisers that is something to shout about! They returned to the main stage in Troon once more for 2023 and, if possible, delivered an even louder and more enthusiastic performance than ever before. NWOBHM provides the backdrop for everything that WinterStorm has become and as long as these guys are playing we'll keep bringing them back! The track featured is "Hellbound" from the band's second album Spellbound released in 1981

Jim Kirkpatrick

As WinterStorm followers are well aware Jim Kirkpatrick played a pivotal and catalytic role in the genesis of the event and, since that fateful night in 2015, Jim has been a supporter and confidante for the organisers and has appeared with FM and as part of the After the 'Storm acoustic sessions with Steve Overland. This is the first time however that Jim Kirkpatrick has performed his own materials with his own band and it was just a towering performance. This track, "Always On The Road" is taken from the 2023 album release Ballad Of A Prodigal Son which is a superb collection of blues infused rock.

Clann an Drumma

We first saw Clann An Drumma on some street somewhere and the energy that they gave off was quite awesome and with WinterStorm's propensity to introduce its audiences to the unexpected it just seemed right to invite them to open the stage on the Saturday of WinterStorm 2022 to an unsuspecting crowd. Unsuspecting they may have been but unreceptive they were not and they came back this year bridging the crossing between afternoon and evening just perfectly! The tribal drums and pipes are accompanied by a rousing narrative that calls on the spirits of our ancestors and results in an emotional, spine tingling performance for the whole audience not just those of us with Scottish blood. WinterStorm is after all an inclusive, welcoming, international music event!

Danny Vaughn & Harry Elliot

Danny Vaughn has become a great friend to WinterStorm over the years and this year as well as fronting an amazing Tyketto set on the main stage on the Saturday he delivered an acoustic masterclass at After the 'Storm on the Sunday. Here he's finishing off the set with Harry Elliot with Lay Your Body Down.

Lyin' Rampant

Lyin' Rampant were formed in Ayrshire in 1982 as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and released a single album Up and Cumin' - yes it was the eighties and Scottish rock band double entendres were prevalent! They were tipped for big things but unfortunately they split in 1991. Roll on to 2023 and Shock City promotions in Glasgow added them to their curated band list for the Sessions Stage at WinterStorm and following a band pulling out Lyin' Rampant were promoted to opening the main stage. Even for the fans of old there were probably limited expectations but the guys took control of the opportunity and produced a polished and powerful performance and more than one over the several hundred fans in already. They carried this on touring in support of Graham Bonnet across the UK Here's "Say Goodbye (Sayonara)" from that first album.

Chantel McGregor Acoustic

"You can't put an acoustic set in the middle of a Saturday afternoon during a rock festival!" Yes, at WinterStorm we can and boy did Chantel McGregor prove that it was not only a good decision but one of the most memorable we have made. The Yorkshire lass first performed in 2022 after the full band set on the main stage and you could hear the proverbial pin drop. It was so good we did again in 2023 and it had the same mesmerising impact. So here's Chantel McGregor performing Anaesthetize from her 2015 album 'Lose Control' on the Sessions Stage at WinterStorm 2024.

Glasgow

Shock City Productions have been long term friends and associates to WinterStorm and in that time we have worked together on various projects. 2023 culminated in Shock curating the second Sessions Stage and it resulted in bringing together some classic old school Scottish bands to the event. One of these was a reformed Glasgow - this track "Under the Lights" was released on 7 inch back in 1988. Was great to see them back on stage to a most appreciative audience.

Electric Gypsy

Electric Gypsy. Who? Brazil? Honestly? Aye okay let's have a look. That was probably the general reaction as the audience walked upstairs to the second stage and very quickly filled it. Well what followed was simply outrageous. Loud and heavy, no-one left and the queue on the stairs didn't budge. Electric Gypsy are from Belo Horizonte, Brazil and undoubtedly influenced by 70s and 80s rock and metal stadium bands but with an essence of blues rock too. With powerful vocals, soaring guitar licks, heavy bass and simply monstrous drums! It was a performance and a half!
Electric Gypsy

Bad Actress

Bad Actress first appeared at the post/pre Covid lockdown version in 2021 following their winning appearance during the 'StormBreakers events. That first appearance gave them the right to open the stage on day one and I'm not sure they could believe their eyes when they walked onto stage at one thirty on a Friday to about four hundred fans! They delivered, belying their youth, and were invited back to the main stage for 2023. Unfortunately they had logistic issues and had to change dates and stages at the last minute. This track was therefore filmed on the upstairs Sessions Stage - Rockin' With You; which sure as hell Bad Actress did again!
